Earlier it was reported that Samsung intends to expand production of image sensors in 2021 to reduce dependence on third-party suppliers. Sources said that the line Galaxy Note20 does not have a sensor 3D ToF, because Sony was uploaded orders from Apple for the new iPhone 12.
The document, recently filed by the South Korean company Samsung in the Intellectual Property Office of the European Union (EUIPO), may include the name of the image sensor, which will be used in the flagship smartphone Samsung Galaxy S21.
The manufacturer has registered a trademark ISOCELL Vizion, the description of which clearly states that it can be used with image sensors, in particular, with 3D ToF modules. Also in the description of the patent lists a variety of options for using such a sensor, including face recognition – in this case it is a sensor for the front camera.
Time of flight (ToF) cameras record the time for which light is reflected from an object. This data is used for distance determination and 3D map creation. Such sensors can be used to blur the background in portrait mode, to track gestures and create 3D models for augmented and virtual reality applications.
