As 5G networks become more and more popular, operators are beginning to abandon outdated technologies. Mobile operators in Germany have set terms for terminating services in 3G networks.
Deutsche Telekom informed that it plans to disconnect its 3G network already on June 30, 2021. After that the operator intends to continue increasing the number of 4G and 5G base stations. Operators Telefonica Deutschland and Vodafone Germany announced their plans to disconnect 3G networks in 2022.
In Deutsche Telekom said the company will use 4G networks to fill the gap in 3G coverage. However, customers who do not have compatible equipment will have to switch to a 2G network. The company added that almost all packages already include access to 4G. This means that customers will not have to pay extra for new packets.
It should be noted that 3G networks have survived on the market much longer than their predecessors – more than 20 years. But everything comes to an end. And today the 5th generation networks are beginning to “rule” the market.
Dirk Wossner, a board member and CEO of Deutsche Telekom, said the operator is actively deploying 5G networks in Germany.
Disabling 3G next summer will allow us to improve our network. We are using the 3G frequency spectrum, which is becoming available for the latest technologies. We want to offer LTE to all users and we are building the largest 5G network in Germany.
The shutdown of 3G networks is continuing on a global scale. Official announcements about the termination of 3G services have been made in India, Spain, USA and other regions.
