Last year’s smartphones Google Pixel 4 received the function Motion Sense based on Project Soli technology, which should have allowed you to control the device with gestures over the device. On paper, everything looked pretty beautiful, we were promised that with the help of gestures you can skip songs, turn off alarms, adjust the volume of playback and so on. However, in practice, the function worked in some countries and not in all countries.
This year the company has completely abandoned the gesture system, which used tiny radar, and added to its new smartphones Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G obsolete fingerprint scanner on the back panel.
However, Google claims that the company has not canceled the development of Project Soli and Motion Sense. The head of the department of new equipment Google Rick Osterloh confirmed in an interview with The Verge that “they will be used in the future. Executive Director confirmed that the technology was too expensive to use in phones that Google has decided to release this year. Rick Osterloh did not specify whether Project Soli and Motion Sense will be used in the next Pixel smartphone or some other Google products.
According to various media reports, this year Google plans to ship only 800,000 Pixel 5 phones. Moreover, the total volume of shipments of Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 throughout the year will be about 3 million smartphones.
