RAMDISK technology, which allows you to create a virtual partition in RAM for installing various software and increases the speed of games up to 100%, is well known throughout the world of PCs, but for smartphones it’s something new. At the same time, the increased amount of RAM in the phones made it possible to use RAMDISK in them as well. And in Xiaomi, you could say, the technology has been made available to the public.
Employee Zeng Xuezhong told Weibo about how everything works with the Mi 10 Ultra example. For starters, he noted that even though the flagship uses UFS 3.1 flash memory, its speed is still lower than LPDDR5: 1700MB/s (read, write) versus 44GB/s. Therefore, the installation of games directly into the RAM and their subsequent operation is much faster – on average by 50%. In addition, in this case the game does not take up flash memory space. That’s why RAMDISK can be handy when the user just wants to try the game: if he likes it, he will install it into the internal memory, and if he doesn’t like it, it will disappear from the RAM without any traces. How much space is available when using RAMDISK? Up to 50% of the available space. That is, in the case of the version with 12 GB RAM, 6 GB, and in the case of the top model with 16 GB RAM, 8 GB.
The option to install the game in RAMDISK is provided in the Mi Game Center utility and is called “Quick Installation”. In practice, a game that can be installed on a smartphone in 19 seconds has been installed in RAMDISK in 10 seconds. That’s why Xiaomi says it nearly doubles the game’s speed. As noted, it is possible to install more than 10 games in RAMDISK at the moment, but in the future this list will clearly expand. Only it is not known, whether other smartphones Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco support this possibility.
