Licid Motors recently introduced its electric sedan Air, a model that has been developed for many years. It is expected that Air will be a serious competitor to Tesla (and first of all to Model S) on the local American market, but looking at the prices, we can’t say it. Thus, if the price of the Model S in the USA is in the range from 80 to 100 thousand dollars, the price range for Air is much greater – from 80 to 170 thousand dollars!
However, Air looks even better in terms of characteristics, and Air is also presented as a luxury sedan. And it looks, perhaps, more interesting than the Model S.
In fact, Air might not have made it to the conveyor belt – the company, which faced certain difficulties several years ago, was saved by Arab investments. Since then, the work on the project has been boiling with double force.
However, today’s announcement does not mean a rapid start of sales of sedans: Air can be purchased only in the second quarter of 2021, and even then will offer only top options:
- Air Grand Touring for 140 thousand dollars;
- Air Dream Edition for the same 170 thousand dollars.
Air Grand Touring has a power reserve of 830 km and 800 hp power unit, which accelerates the car from 0 to 97 km / h in 3 seconds. Air Dream Edition is equipped with a 1080 hp power unit, has a power reserve of 810 km and accelerates from 0 to 97 km/h in 2.5 seconds. We have already seen how fast Lucid Air can be.
The cheaper variant is Lucid Air Touring, but it will be available only in the fourth quarter of 2021. For $95,000 this version will provide dynamics comparable to Grand Touring (from 0 to 97 km/h for 3.2 s), but the power reserve and capacity will be less – 653 km and 620 hp. Finally, the most affordable Lucid Air will come on sale only in 2022.
This version is called – Air. Characteristics is not yet available, but the price is known: “less than 80 thousand dollars”.
All Lucid Airs support a fast charging system, which we have already written about. Each car has a built-in 19.2 kW charger, and it is bi-directional: in case of this, the whole house can be powered by the car battery. Air can use one, two or three electric motors, the biggest battery capacity is 113 kWh.
What Lucid Air will not have is a full-fledged autopilot – it will be difficult to compete with Tesla in this respect. Potential buyers can count on 2-3 levels of autonomous driving system: proprietary DreamDrive technology combines 32 sensors, including radar, lidar and ultrasonic sensors, as well as GPS.
The interior features include a curved 34-inch 5K Glass Cockpit screen and a retractable central “control panel” between driver and front passenger. There is also a voice assistant – Amazon Alexa, which can be used for navigation, phone calls or, for example, to control systems of the smart home.
In general, Lucid Air turned out to be an interesting, status, clearly comfortable and high-tech electric car. But it has one problem, from which there is nowhere to go. And it is called Tesla Model S2. Tesla is already actively working on the second generation of Model S and Model X. And if we take into account how successful the Model 3 is, we can think that the Model S2 will only develop this success – it will become more modern, more technologically advanced and in general better than the current model. In this case, Lucid will have to look for additional arguments in order to incline potential buyers towards its product.
