It is accepted to assume that for games you need a cool CPU. But it is not: everything depends on the resources that the game requires. So, first of all, it is necessary to decide for what purposes you need a computer and what games you prefer. This will allow you not to overpay for unnecessary power and collect the optimal PC.
Of course, you may object that choosing a game processor for the PC in 2020 for a particular type of game is wrong. Today you play strategy, and tomorrow you will want to try shooters. And what then, to buy a new “percent”?
It is really so. But if your budget is limited? and its increase is not planned, it is better to decide on your preferences from the very beginning. After all, prices for desktop processors even with average performance start from 7000 rubles, which is one third of the cost of all components.
Before we tell you how to choose a processor for a gaming computer, we want to briefly introduce you to the classification of CPU.
Types of processors by performance
- Intel Core – the most powerful processors;
- Intel Pentium – the average level;
- Intel Celeron – low performance processors.
Processors of Core line are also divided into classes, depending on the functionality.
- Core i3 – the weakest processors in this line;
- Core i5 – medium;
- Core i7 – powerful;
- Core i9 is super powerful;

For modern PCs, 8, 9 and 10 generation processors are relevant. It can be identified by the first digit in the chip index. For example:
- Core i5-6600 – 6th generation Skylake (2015);
- Core i7-7700 is the 7th generation of Kaby Lake (2016);
- Core i7-8700 is the 8th generation of Coffee Lake (2017).
The K Index at the end means an unlocked multiplier that the user can change at will. This is called CPU overclocking or overclocking. It is needed to increase the performance of the CPU. However this requires a special motherboard that can handle the load.
- Series A (A4, A6, A8, A10, A12), Athlon, Phenom – all this processors are office solutions which not designed for gaming. Many models have long been discontinued;
- Ryzen – a fresh line, which covers the entire market: from office solutions to professional products.
Ryzen line is divided into 5 main categories:
- Ryzen 3 – the weakest;
- Ryzen 5 – medium;
- Ryzen 7 – powerful;
- Ryzen 9 – super powerful;
- Ryzen Threadripper – professional.
During its short history, Ryzen CPUs has been improving for three generations, which can also be determined by the first digit at the beginning of the index:
- Ryzen 5 1600 – first;
- Ryzen 7 2700 – is the second;
- Ryzen 3 3100 – the third.
By default, the multiplier in Ryzen processors is unlocked. This means all of them are overclockable. However, this will require a special motherboard as with Intel. Be careful: some models do not have an embedded video chip. Therefore you will not be able to use some CPUs without a discrete video card.
Which CPU should I choose for my gaming computer?
If you mainly play games such as Hearthstone or similar projects, then an office CPU is enough for you. AMD company is a leader in this respect and offers a great Ryzen 3 3200G processor. It will cost you about $100.
This processor has a predecessor, which has slightly worse characteristics, but you should not save money, because AMD has a democratic policy. Outdated models cost almost as much as the current ones. This rule is true for almost all their products.
The chip of this “stone” is that it has a built-in Vega 8 video card, which is not far behind the GT 1030 in performance. Yes, it is far from being a graphics tamer, but it is enough for the simplest games. If you want more, you’ll have to pay for the CPU from the middle price segment.
Here the situation is not so clear anymore. Intel and AMD compete very tightly, so each manufacturer has interesting models. Intel offers Core i5-9400F and asks $150 for it.
The company’s strategy is to make powerful CPUs that can easily handle the low flow load. Namely, such a task falls on the shoulders of the CPU in almost all games. Only some projects require 8-12 threads from the stone. That is why the i5-9400F with its 6 cores and 6 threads will fit perfectly into your build if you need maximum FPS. Note that the F index at the end means there is no built-in video core.
AMD is on a different path and attracts customers with its low price and multi-year perspective. By long-term perspective we mean a large number of threads, thanks to which the processor will be able to cope with even heavy games without friezes and after many years, albeit with a smaller than the Intel frame rate. In the middle sector the most popular processor is Ryzen 5 2600.
It costs a bit cheaper than the competitor’s analogue and has the same 6 cores, but already 12 threads. However, please note that processors of the Ryzen family are extremely sensitive to RAM frequency. The difference between 2400 MHz and 3200 MHz is about 20%. It seems to save on CPU, and it seems to require RAM at a higher price. In general, AMD differs in that their products are quite capricious with respect to the rest of the iron. Intel is a more stable company in this respect.
Not so long ago Intel had no competition in this segment of the market, and therefore the upgrades of old models were held without any significant growth. However, in recent years, the manufacturer has significantly increased the capacity of its CPUs.
Core i7 10700F is one of the most powerful solutions on the market, which is in the teeth absolutely any game. It has 8 cores and 16 streams, and in the current realities it is even redundant. But the appetite for games grows every year and in a couple of years these characteristics will be in line with system requirements.
If you are interested only in professional tasks, it is better to look in the direction of AMD. They offer the Ryzen 9 3900X as an alternative. This model has 12 cores and 24 streams. For gaming, of course, you don’t need these specifications. However, if your work requires a powerful processor and you like to play, then this solution seems reasonable.
FPS you will not see higher than the Core i7 10700F, but in professional tasks the difference will be huge. Keep in mind that under such a processor needs proper cooling.
