Seagate launches sales of 18TB Exos Hard Drives

Seagate Technology has announced that it is beginning shipments of hard drives on its 18TB enterprise segment hard magnetic disks.

The Exos X18 family of drives features Helium Germoson filling technology and Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR). At the same time Exos Application Platform (AP) 2U12 and a new controller for AP 4U100 systems are presented. AP integrates high-capacity storage and computing resources into a single platform, offering enterprise-class firmware, data protection and automatic tiered storage.

According to the manufacturer, the Seagate Exos X18 hard drives and updated Exos AP controllers “enable enterprises to efficiently address the exponential growth of data volumes by increasing system capacity and reducing deployment complexity”.

The 3.5-inch Exos X18 drive is available in 6Gb/s SATA and 12Gb/s SAS versions, both with and without embedded full encryption. The spindle speed is 7200 rpm, with an average access delay of 4.16 msec. 4KB random access unit performance reaches 170 IOPS in read mode and 550 IOPS in write mode. A simple unit consumes 5.3 Watts and the maximum power consumption is 9.4 Watts. Mean Time Between Failure is estimated at 2.5 million hours. The drives are designed for 24/7 operation.

The recommended retail price for an 18TB Exos X18 HDD is approximately $562.
