For the first time in history, expenses for cloud services infrastructure in the world exceeded expenses for traditional IT infrastructure

Experts of the analytical company IDC calculated that the cost of cloud services infrastructure, including servers, corporate storage and Ethernet switches, in the second quarter of this year was 34.4% more than in the second quarter of last year. At the same time, the cost of traditional IT infrastructure, that is, not related to cloud services, in annual terms decreased by 8.7%.

According to analysts, market dynamics reflects changes in business, educational and social activity caused by the COVID-19 crisis and the role that IT infrastructure plays in these changes. All over the world people have moved to remote work, training and entertainment at home. Without an appropriate IT infrastructure, primarily the infrastructure of public cloud services, such a transition would not have been possible.

In the segment of infrastructure of public cloud services, expenses for the year increased by 47.8% to $14.1 billion. As a result, these costs for the first time exceeded the costs of traditional IT infrastructure. Infrastructure costs of private cloud services for the year increased by 7%, up to $5 billion.
