Spectra Logic introduced the industry’s first tape library capable of storing exabytes of uncompressed data

Calling itself a leader in data storage and data management solutions, Spectra Logic has announced that it has reached a psychological milestone. Its TFinity ExaScale Tape Library is the industry’s first tape library capable of storing exabytes of uncompressed data using LTO-9 technology.

As the world’s largest storage system, Spectra’s TFinity Tape Library is considered the de facto standard in data-managed computing environments, providing unrivaled storage density, scalability, reliability and availability with the smallest footprint among enterprise class tape libraries.

LTO-9 technology has increased capacity per cartridge by 50 percent over LTO-8 and data transfer rates by 15 percent. If we go to absolute values, the cartridge capacity is 18 TB, at a speed of 400 MB / s.

The capacity of LTO cartridges will continue to increase with the output of future generations. Thus, the capacity of LTO-10 cartridge is planned to reach 36 TB, LTO-11 – to 72 TB, and LTO-12 – to 144 TB. According to Spectra Logic, this progress gives users the confidence that their investment in ribbon media is safe and that the cost per unit of storage will remain optimal throughout the life of the device.
