Seagate Technology announced today that it has begun mass shipments of drives on its 18TB SkyHawk Artificial Intelligence (AI) magnetic hard drives. According to the manufacturer, this is the world’s first hard drive specifically designed for artificial intelligence surveillance systems, allowing for faster and smarter decision-making. It supports deep and machine learning workload flows for edge applications with ImagePerfectAI.
Deep learning systems require the ability to store more data over time to become smarter and more accurate in their predictive analysis, and behavioral analysis requires significantly more data than traditional video capture. Therefore, SkyHawk AI simultaneously supports 32 AI streams together with 64 video streams and work within network video recording systems with multiple bays and AI support.
Resource SkyHawk AI is claimed to be able to record 550 TB of data per year, which is more than three times the workload of standard hard drives for video surveillance systems. This allows the drives to be used in complex surveillance environments without sacrificing performance. According to the manufacturer, the drive “intelligently adapts between traditional video workloads and video + AI workloads.
The 3.5-inch drive features a SATA 6Gb/s interface. The drive uses “conventional” magnetic recording (CMR) technology. The germ zone is filled with helium. The buffer volume is 256 MB. The average power consumption is 8 W, in sleep mode it is reduced to 1.3 W.
The range includes 18, 16, 14, 12, 10 and 8TB models. They are backed by a three-year warranty. The recommended retail price for an 18TB HDD is approximately $511.
