Recently, the Denuvo protection developers had a really dark day. Hacker group CPY was able to bypass protection on four projects at once:
- eFootball Pro Evolution Soccer 2021;
- Total War: A Troy Saga;
- Mafia: Definitive Edition;
- and Death Stranding.
It is noteworthy that the last two projects were protected by the latest version of the program.
Let’s remember what other games were, whose defense fell in record time. Note that we are strongly against pirates and urge you to respect the work of the developers.
Microsoft Flight Simulator. A few hours on hacking
Perhaps the real professionals can be considered a hacker group HOODLUM. They managed to hack Microsoft Flight Simulator in just a few hours since its release. And this despite the fact that the game was protected not by one, but by three defenses at once: Arxan, XboxLive and Steam.
However, the question remains how the loading of new map fragments, which in the licensed version are streamed from Azure servers, will work. Shortcut!
It is noteworthy that Arxan protects Red Dead Redemption 2, which was also hacked.
Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. 4 days on hacking
4 days. That’s how long it took the CODEX hackers to crack Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, which they immediately reported in their thematic blog on Reddit. It is worth noting that the game was protected by the latest version of Denuvo and Origin.
However, even taking into account the hacking, for two months since the release, the project has dispersed in circulation of 8 million copies and brought the developers not one million dollars.
Code Vein. 5 days for hacking
Another game affected by the same team was Code Vein. Action type souls-like, released in September 2019, in which players had to escape from hell, fell in 5 days since the release.
However, this time the hackers themselves were also burned: CODEX hurried up without waiting for the update. A few days after the release of the game, the developers from Bandai Namco released the update 1.03. And the game again stopped working.
Trials of Mana. 45 days on hacking
And the last game in the selection, which was hacked by CODEX, was Trials of Mana, which appeared in Steam in April 2020. The game is a remake of RPG Seiken Densetsu 3, released in 1995.
Strange as it may seem, the key was an action demo version, which appeared together with the full game. In the game files hackers managed to find access to the full version. Square Enix immediately responded and removed the free version, promising to return it after adding a new protection. But the game still managed to get to the torrents.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. A month on hacking
The last project released at the moment about assassins did not resist the hackers. In November 2018 in the network there was information that the Italian team of hackers CPY was able to bypass the defense game a month after its release. And in April 2020 it became known that the hacker under the nickname 0xEMPRESS was able to hack the latest addition The Fate of Atlantis. He also spent about a month on it.
Whoever is this mysterious lover of free games, he knows his business. Hacker jump said he was going to circumvent Denuvo in every game with this protection. He also says that he is engaged in hacking not for personal gain, but nevertheless actively accepts donations from users and is looking for someone who would sponsor it.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider. A little over 2 months on the hack
The most famous tomb raider Lara Croft held out a little longer. Italian hackers from the CPY group took just over 2 months to crack the last adventures of the girl Shadow of the Tomb Raider. It should be noted that at that time the game was protected by the newest version of Denuvo 4.9.
Traditionally, information about the detected vulnerability first appeared in the subject blog on Reddit.
Need for Speed: Heat. 49 days on hacking
In December 2019 on one resource, which gathers freeloaders, there was a post in which hackers from the P2P group said they could bypass the Denuvo protection in Need for Speed: Heat. It took them 49 days to hack into the game.
However, hackers have cracked an unfinished version of the game that the developers were going to “finish off”. In this case, in their post, they described in detail all the loopholes that were used to bypass the protection. It remains to hope that the developers have learned this lesson, and in the future will be more thorough approach to security issues.
If after reading today’s top you have the impression that Denuvo is useless, then we hurry to dispel this prejudice. Yes, the defense in some games the defense works a little better, in some – a little worse. A good example is the former exclusive PlayStation Horizon Zero Dawn. Its hackers managed to crack in less than 24 hours, as the developers have not added any protection at all, neither Denuvo, nor anything else in the game.
And one more time. Any work has to be paid for. So we encourage you to always buy licensed versions of the games.
