As you know, PlayStation 5 received an ultra-fast SSD with data transfer rates up to 5.5 GB / s. At the time of the first announcement of PS5 this figure was impressive even against the background of SSD with PCIe 4.0 interface, but the sale is already preparing to enter the Samsung 980 Pro at speeds up to 7 GB/s.
However, the Sony console has a number of architectural features that make its storage subsystem even faster. Sony initially talked about the speed of 8-9 GB / s for compressed data using a hardware decoder Kraken. As it turned out, this is not the limit. Oodle said that Sony had licensed its Oodle Texture technology, which is responsible for compressing textures in the GPU. And if Kraken has compression ratios of 1.45 to 1 or 1.64 to 1, then in the case of Oodle Texture (together with Kraken) we are talking about the ratio of 3.16 to 1, and this figure Oodle got in some fresh game, not just on paper.
And this already gives us a bandwidth of over 17 GB/s! Of course, all this must be supported by the specific game, and it’s unlikely that such projects will see the light of day in the near future, but the life cycle of consoles is not two or three years.
